The Hiram College swimming and diving teams defeated non-conference opponent Bethany (W.Va.) College at the Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier men defeated the Bisons, 103-78, and the women won, 115-95, lifting their records to 3-5 and 4-5 respectively in dual meet competition.
Leading the men was junior captain Job Fields (Chillicothe) who swam in every event and had what veteran head coach Jack Groselle stated to be “his best times of the season.” Fields took two individual events sweeping both the 50-meter backstroke and the 100-meter back with times of 33.98 and 1:15.58 respectively. Also with individual wins was freshman Danny Essel(Euclid) who won the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke events with times of 35.00 and 1:15.79. Freshman Christian Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:32.30 as well. Continuing the winning streak was freshman Mark Stanke (Dover) who led in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.77 seconds. Rounding out the individual event winners was freshman Chris Boardman (Westlake), who touched the wall first in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:12.94. In addition, the men’s 200-meter medley relay comprised of Fields, freshman Chance Gray (Shippensburg), Boardman, and freshman Alex Ham (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) posted a winning a time of 2:10.34.
Leading the Terrier women in wins was sophomore Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) who dominated in the 100-meter free as well as the 200-meter free with times of 1:05.25 and 2:21.37 respectively. Also earning victories for the women was freshman Rachel Patten(Castalia/Margaretta) in the 800-meter free, who posted a time of 10:16.09. Freshman Lexi Cortes ((Cleveland/Lutheran West) won the one-meter diving event with a score of 137.10 points. Sophomore Becca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local) surged past her opponents to win with a time of 1:18.21 in the 100-meter butterfly, and junior Jessie Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Acad.) rounded out the event list with a win in the 100-meter back, touching the wall with a time of 1:24.17. The women’s 200-meter freestyle relay also brought in a win against Bethany. The relay consisted of sophomore Megan McBratnie (Berkley, Mich./Berkley), Gruden, Daniels, and Patten and had a winning time of 2:05.33.
The Hiram swim teams will remain idle until January 11, when they will host Malone University in a non-conference dual meet at Alumni Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
