Both the Hiram College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished fourth at the Grove City (Pa.) College Winter Invitational in Grove City, Pa.
The Terrier women finished posted a team total of 486 points to place fourth out of six teams. Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College captured the team title with 1,148 points. Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) University was second with 861 points and host school Grove City was third with 847 points.
The top individual performance for the women was a fourth-place finish by freshman Rachel Patten (Castalia/Margaretta) in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:09.09. She also placed seventh in the 1650-yard freestyle (19:27.55). Other top finishes included a sixth and seventh-place finish by sophomore Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) in the 100-yard free (58.23 seconds) and the 200-yard free (2:06.73). Sophomore Samantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.98) and eighth in the 200-yard breast (2:50.65). Fellow sophomore Kailey Saywell (Kirtland) finished in the top-ten in the 100-yard breast with a mark of 1:26.01. The women also had two strong finishes in relay events. The team of Daniels, Patten, freshman Megan Mcbratnie (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) and seniorJessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy) finished fifth in the 800-yard free relay in a time of 8:44.79. The same team placed sixth in the 400-yard free relay in a mark of 3:58.55.
The men ended the day with 313 team points to place fourth overall of five teams. Wheeling Jesuit captured the men’s team title with 1,219 points, followed by Grove City with 899 points. Rounding out the top three was Washington & Jefferson with 854 points.
The top overall individual efforts for the Terrier men were a pair of sixth-place finishes by freshman Danny Essel (Euclid) in the 200-yard breast (2:25.31) and by junior Job Fields (Chillicothe) in the 1650-yard free with a time of 18:58.55. Essel also placed eighth in the 100-yard breast (1:06.56). Fields posted a top-ten mark in the 400-yard IM touching the wall in a time of 4:44.11. Freshman Christian Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) finished just behind Fields in the same event placing ninth with a time of 4:45.69. Rounding out the top placements for the men was freshman Mark Stanke (Dover) who recorded a time of 1:58.88 in the 200-yard free to finish 10th overall. The men also had a pair of top-ten relay teams. Fields, Stanke, Essel and Kelley combined efforts in the 800-yard free relay to finish sixth with a time of 8:20.22. Essel, Fields, freshmanChance Gray (Shippensburg) and Stanke teamed up to place 10th in the 400-yard free relay posting a mark of 3:41.85.
The Hiram swim teams will host Bethany (W.Va.) College in a non-conference dual meet next Saturday, Dec. 8 at Alumni Memorial Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
