WASHINGTON, PA. — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams lost a non-conference dual meet against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College today (Saturday, Jan. 28) in the regular-season finale in Washington, Pa. The Terrier women were defeated, 123-94, and the men lost, 86-57. [Meet Results]
Following today’s outcome, the Hiram women end the regular season with a 5-9 overall record and the men finish the season with a mark of 2-10 in dual meet competition.
The women had one event winner in freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) who captured the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.84 seconds. She also finished third in the 200-yard free with a mark of 2:07.27. Other top finishes included a second-place showing by senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) in the 1650-yard free (19:35.97). She also placed third in the 500-yard free (5:53.84) event. Fellow senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) recorded a time of 2:34.08 to finish third in the 200-yard butterfly.
The men were led by sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) who won the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:28.69. He also finished third in the 100-yard free (52.11 seconds). The other top finish for the men was turned in by sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) who placed third overall in teh 200-yard backstroke (2:18.28).
The Hiram swim teams will next prepare for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships which will be held on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 16-18 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. The first event on Thursday is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
