HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Bethany (W.Va.) College in a non-conference dual meet on Saturday (Nov. 6) at the Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier men defeated the Bisons, 148-112, and the women won, 147-104. In addition, the men broke two pool records with their victories in both the 400-meter medley relay and the 800-meter freestyle relay. [Complete Results]
With the victories, both the men’s and women’s teams improve to 1-1 overall in dual meet competition.
The team members of seniors Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon), Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa), Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) and Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) combined efforts in both the 400-meter medley relay and the 800-meter free relay with times of 4:10.24 and 8:11.01 respectively setting pool records in both events. The previous records were set during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In addition, the men had eight individual event winners, including a trio of multiple-event champions in Kelly and freshmen Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge) and Job Fields (Chillicothe). Kelly won both the 50-meter free (25.28 seconds) and the 50-meter butterfly (28.37 seconds). Astalos captured the 50-meter breaststroke (33.77 seconds) and the 100-meter individual medley (1:07.77). Fields touched the wall first in both the 800-meter free (9:54.20) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.14) events. Morales won the 100-meter free with a time of 56.59 seconds and freshman Greg Kithcart (Hudson) rounded out the individual winners with a victory in the 200-meter free with a mark of 2:14.28.
The women won all but five events and were led by seniors Kelsey Covell (Parma Heights/Valley Forge) and Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) who both one two events. Covell touched the wall first in both the 100-meter backstroke (1:17.26) and the 400-meter free (5:16.68). Krohn came in first in both the 50-meter back (37.31 seconds) and the 50-meter fly (32.09 seconds). Other event winners included junior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) in the 800-meter free with a time of 10:43.71. Junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) recorded a winning time of 2:25.11 in the 200-meter free. Senior Mackenzie Saywell (Kirtland) captured the 50-meter back with a mark of 41.29 seconds and freshman Caitlin McCurley (Napa Valley, Calif./Granite Hills) won the 100-meter breast (1:27.18). Rounding out the individual winners was junior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Frazer, Mich./Frazer) who won the three-meter diving event with 117.05 points. In addition, the women captured one of two relays with a winning time in the 400-meter medley relay. Covell, Saywell, Krohn and senior Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) teamed up to post a top time of 5:10.41.
The swim teams return to the pool on Friday, Nov. 12 when Hiram hosts the University of Mount Union in a non-conference dual meet at Alumni Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
