GROVE CITY, PA.  —  The Hiram College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed the first day of competition at the annual Grove City (Pa.) College Invitational today (Friday, Dec. 3) in Grove City, Pa.   The men are currently in fourth place and the women are seventh.  [Results]

The Terrier men totaled 141.5 points to place fourth overall of six teams.  Host school Grove City currently leads the team standings with 395 points.  Misericordia (Pa.) University is second with 360 points and Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College rounds out the top three with 205.5 points.

Individually, the top performance for the men was recorded by senior Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon) who placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.19.  Fellow senior Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) finished third in the same event with a mark of 2:02.90.  Senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.50 seconds and junior Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) touched the wall in fifth place with a mark of 22.68 seconds.  In addition, the men finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.  The team of Morales, Wegman, Kelly and Subda combined efforts to record a time of 1:29.53.

The Hiram women finished the first day of competition with 15 points to place seventh of eight teams.  California University of Pennsylvania leads the event with 292 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson in second with 230 points.  Lock Haven (Pa.) University rounds out the top three at 206.5 points.

The top finish for the women was recorded by senior Kelsey Covell (Parma Heights/Valley Forge) in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:54.10 and placed 24th overall.  Junior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) also had a top-25 finish in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:28.02 and was 25th overall.  The top relay effort for the Terrier women came in the 200-yard free relay in which the team of freshman Jessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy), Jackie Steffes, senior Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) and junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) finished 14th with a time of 1:47.57.

The swimming and diving teams will conclude the two-day event tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 4) with the first event scheduled for 9 a.m.
