GROVE CITY, PA. — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams completed the first day of events of the annual Grove City (Pa.) College Invitational tonight (Friday, Dec. 2) in Grove City, Pa. The women are currently in fifth place and the men are sixth. [First Day Results]
The women posted a team total of 68 points to place fifth of seven teams after the first day of events. Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College leads the overall team standings with 400 points. Misericordia (Pa.) University is second with 316 points and East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University rounds out the top three with 238 points.
Individually for the Terriers, the top finish of the day was recorded by senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) who placed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:42.64. Also posting a top time was freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) who finished 12th in the 50-yard free with a mark of 26.37 seconds. The women also had a top-ten finishing relay team in the 200-yard free relay. The team of Buckley, senior Francesca Luppino (Medina/Cloverleaf), sophomore Jessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy) and senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston) combined for a time of 1:48.01 to place seventh in the event.
The men ended the first day of competition with a team-total 58 points and is sixth of six teams. Misericordia leads the overall competition with a total of 295 points. Grove City is second with 230 points and Washington & Jefferson is third with 211 points.
Sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) had the top individual finish of 10th place in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:22.02. Also recording a top-20 finish was sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) who placed 18th in the 50-yard free in a time of 23.73 seconds.
Hiram will conclude the two-day invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 3). The first event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
