HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams defeated Defiance College today (Saturday, Nov. 19) in a non-conference dual meet at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women defeated the Yellow Jackets, 97-82, and the men won, 83-74. [Meet Results]
With the sweep, the Hiram women improve to 4-2 overall in dual meet competition and the men improve to 2-3 overall for the season.
The women captured eight events and were led by a trio of multiple event winners in senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston), senior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Detroit, Mich./Frazer) and senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills). Szanto touched the wall first in the 200-meter freestyle (2:32.23) and the 100-meter free (1:09.26). Kispert-Bostick won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with 120.30 points and 126.50 points respectively. McCurley posted the top overall time in both the 1500-meter free (20:07.46) and the 400-meter free (5:09.68). Also recording victories was freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) in the 50-meter free (29.32 seconds). Freshman Marisa Celeste (Rocky River/Gilmour Academy) had the fastest overall time in the 100-meter free (1:16.65) and fellow freshman Samantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) won the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:29.66. The women also had a winning relay team in the 200-meter medley relay. Szanto, McCurley, senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and senior Francesca Luppino (Medina/Cloverleaf) posted a combined winning time of 2:26.41.
On the men’s side, the Terriers captured seven individual events and had multiple multiple-event winners. Sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) won both the 1500-meter free (18:50.42) and the 400-meter free (4:51.82). Junior James Degroff (Cuyahoga Falls) touched the wall first in both the 50-meter free (25.57 seconds) and the 100-meter free (1:00.00) events. Sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) rounded out the multi-event winners with victories in the 200-meter individual medley (2:32.96) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.75). Also recording a top mark was freshman Lloyd Eshelman (Canton/GlenOak) in the one-meter dive with 184.55 points. The men also had a victory in the 200-meter medley relay. The team of freshman Kyle Meggas (Lakewood), Astalos, freshman Curtis Webster (Aurora) and Degroff had an overall time of 2:06.89.
Up next for the Hiram swim teams will be the annual Grove City College Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 2-3 in Grove City, Pa. The first event on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
