GAMBIER, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams officially began the 2010-11 season at the annual Kenyon College Relays today (Saturday, Oct. 23) in Gambier. The Terrier men finished fourth and the women placed eighth. [Complete Results]
The Hiram men totaled 84 points to place fourth overall out of nine teams. Denison University won the event with 168 points and was followed by host school Kenyon with 160 points. Allegheny (Pa.) College rounded out the toop three teams with 98 points.
Hiram’s top team performances were a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke relay and the 500-yard freestyle relay. Senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins), freshman Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge), senior Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon) and senior Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) teamed up in the 200-yard breast relay to post a combined time of 1:56.70. In the 500-yard free relay, senior Colin Kelly (Perrysburg), Subda, Morales and Wegman placed sixth with a time of 4:18.85. The men also recorded top-10 finishes in three other events including the 1500-yard free relay, the 400-yard medley individual relay and the 200-yard free relay. Wegman, Morales and Kelly recorded a combined mark of 15:16.19 in the 1500-yard free relay to place ninth overall. Wegman, freshman Job Fields (Chillcothe), Astalos and Morales had a time of 3:55.89 in the 400-yard medley relay and placed 10th overall. In the 200-yard free relay, the quartet of Morales, Wegman, Kelly and Subda posted a time of 1:30.53 which was good enough for eighth place.
The Hiram women ended the event with a team total of 34 points and was eighth overall of eight teams. Denison completed the sweep by capturing the women’s title with 172 points. Kenyon was second at 152 points and Allegheny rounded out the top three with 120 points.
The top finish for the women was turned in by the team of junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge), junior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and senior Kelsey Covell (Parma Heights/Valley Forge) who placed 15th in the 1500-yard free relay with a time of 17:51.35. In addition, the team of senior Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), sophomore Carson Applewhite (Atherton, Calif./Atherton) and freshman Caitlin McCurley (Napa Valley, Calif./Granite Hills) finished 17th in the same event with a mark of 18:19.81. Other top times included a 17th place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke relay in which McCurley, senior Mackenzie Saywell (Kirtland), senior Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) and Dorschel posted a time of 2:26.55. The women also had a team finish 18th in the 200-yard backstroke relay with the team of Krohn, Covell, Saywell and Szanto recording a combined effort of 2:06.19.
The swim teams will open dual match competition on Friday, Oct. 29 when they host Notre Dame College in the home opener at Alumni Memorial Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
