CANTON, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s swimming and team finished ninth of nine teams and the women were eighth of eight teams following the final day of events of the 2010-11 North Coast Athletic Conference Championhips at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. [Championship Website]
The men finshed the three-day event with 334.5 points to placed ninth overall. Denison University captured the team title with 1,774.5 points, followed by Kenyon College in second with 1,572.5 points. Wabash (Ind.) College placed third with 805 points.
The top individual finish in the finals on the final day was turned in by senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) with an 11th place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.31. Freshman Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge) also qualified for the finals in the same event and finished in the top-20 with an 18th place showing and a time of 2:19.34. Senior Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) came in 13th in the 1650-yard freestyle touching the wall in a time of 17:13.29. Joining him was freshman Job Fields (Chililcothe) who also posted a top-20 time at 17:51.60. Rounding out the top individual performances for the men was senior Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) who placed 17th in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 2:01.49. The men also recorded a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard free relay with the team of Subda, Morales, Astalos and Kelly posting a time of 3:13.82.
The women ended the championships with 298 points to place eighth overall. Denison completed the sweep by also capturing the women’s title with 1,829 points. Kenyon was second at 1,482 points and Allegheny (Pa.) College rounded out the top-three with 944 points.
Junior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) recorded the top individual finish by placing 17th overall in the 200-yard fly in a time of 2:19.62. Senior Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) posted a time of 2:18.16 in the 200-yard backstroke and placed 18th overall. Junior Caitlin McCurley (Napa Valley, Calif./Granite Hills) finished 23rd in the 1650-yard free (19:55.26) and senior Jackie Steffes (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) placed 24th in the 100-yard free (58.58 seconds). In addition, the women placed seventh in the 400-yard free relay with the team members of Steffes, seniro Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) and Krohn finishing with a time of 3:54.72.
