HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams fell short in a close dual meet against non-conference opponent Baldwin-Wallace College this evening (Friday, Jan. 20) at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women were defeated, 128-103, and the men lost, 94-79. [Meet Results]
Following tonight’s meet, the women are now 4-7 overall in dual meet competition and the men are now 2-7 overall on the season.
The women captured two individual events with senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) touching the wall first in the 800-meter freestyle in a time of 10:32.05. McCurley also finished second in both the 200-meter individual medley (2:49.92) and the 400-meter free (5:14.06). Freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) won the 100-meter free with a time of 1:04.55 and placed second in the 50-meter free with a mark of 30.42 seconds. Other top finishes included a second-place showing by senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) in the 50-meter butterfly who swam a time of 34.33 seconds. Senior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Detroit, Mich./Frazer) had a pair of second-place finishes in the one-meter and three-meter diving events with 131.80 points and 123.55 points respectively. The women also had a winning relay team in the 200-meter free relay. Sophomore Jessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy), freshman Rebecca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local), senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston) and Buckley posted a combined winning time of 2:02.80.
The men were led by sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) who won a pair of events in the 800-meter free (9:52.11) and the 200-meter IM (2:29.35). Joining Fields in the winner’s circle was freshman Kyle Meggas (Lakewood) who had a top overall time of 35.62 seconds in the 50-meter backstroke. Meggas also placed second in the 100-meter free with a time of 59.75 seconds. Freshman Lloyd Eshelman (Canton/GlenOak) won the three-meter diving event with 157.75 points. Other top times included a pair of second-place finishes by sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) in the 50-meter free (26.62 seconds) and the 50-meter fly (29.28 seconds).
The swim teams continue the season tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 21) when the Terriers host John Carroll University in a non-conference dual meet at Alumni Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
