HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams defeated Malone University in a non-conference duaul meet tonight (Friday, Jan. 14) at the Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women also defeated Ursuline College as part of a tri-meet. The men defeated Malone, 85-67, while the women won, 54-46, against Malone and, 70-16, against Ursuline. [Meet Results]
Following tonight’s action, the men improve to 3-4 overall in dual meet competition and the women are now 4-5 overall.
The men had several multiple individual event winners. Senior Collin Kelly (Perrysburg) touched the wall first in both the 800-meter freestyle (9:29.04) and 100-meter butterfly (1:04.74) events. Senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) posted the winning time in the 200-meter free (2:15.97) and the 100-meter free (55.39 seconds). Freshman Sam Ivcic (Maple Heights) captured both the one and three-meter diving events with 111.90 points and 108.98 points respectively. Freshman Job Fields (Chillicothe) came in first in the 200-meter individual medley (2:32.13) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:12.06). Freshman Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge) also picked up a pair of victories in the 50-meter free (26.28 seconds) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:15.09). The men also swept both relays. The team of Fields, Astalos, freshman Randy Shearer (Ashville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) and senior Jim Griesmer (Chesterland/University School) won the 200-meter medley relay with a mark of 2:05.61. Then in the 200-meter free relay, the team of Fields, Shearer, Astalos and sophomore Sam Cregar (Bainbridge/University School) recorded a combined time of 1:53.86.
The women also had multiple individual event winners. Senior Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) posted the top times in the 100-meter back (1:16.46) and the 200-meter IM (2:43.84). Fellow senior Kelsey Covell (Parma Heights/Valley Forge) came in first in the 800-meter free (10:30.51) and the 400-meter free (5:07.91). Junior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Frazer, Mich./Frazer) won both the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 143.95 points and 126.03 points. Joining the list of individual event winners was junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) in the 200-meter free (2:26.20), Jackie Steffes (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) in the 50-meter free (29.80 seconds) and junior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) in the 100-meter fly (1:15.99). The women also had one winning relay team in the 200-meter free relay. The team of freshman Jessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy), senior Claire Rachek (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), Dorchel and Steffes posted a combined time of 2:03.93.
The swimming and diving teams return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 15) in a North Coast Athletic Conference dual meet against Wittenberg University in Springfield. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
