CANTON, OHIO  —  The Hiram College swimming and diving teams completed the first day of events of the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships today (Thursday, Feb. 10) at the C.T. The men totaled 108 points to rank ninth of nine teams.  Denison University leads the overall team standings with 580 points, followed by Kenyon College in second with 426 points.  Wittenberg University rounds out the top three schools with 224 points.

The men had three swimmers qualify for the finals following the preliminary round earlier in the day.  Senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) recorded the highest finish in the finals with a 15th-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.02 seconds.  Fellow senior Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) placed in the top-20 in the 500-yard free with a mark of 4:56.40.  Freshman Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge) rounded out the finals qualifiers with a time of 2:04.86 in the 200-yard individual medley.  The Hiram men also competed in a pair of relay events and recorded a top finish of seventh place in the 200-yard free relay.  The team of Subda, Astalos, senior Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) and Kelly recorded a combined time of 1:28.32.

On the women’s side, the Terriers scored 103 points to place eighth of eight teams.  Denison currently leads the championships with 609 points and Kenyon is second at 430 points.  Allegheny (Pa.) College rounds out the top-three with 282 points.

Individually, junior Sidney Kispert-Bostick (Frazer, Mich./Frazer) finished 12th in the one-meter dive with 210.15 points.  The Terriers also placed eighth in both the 200-yard free and 400-yard medley relays in finals competition.  The team of freshman Jessie Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy), senior Jackie Steffes (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins), junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) and senior Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) had a combined time of 1:45.21 in the 200-yard free while Steffes, junior Caitlin McCurley (Napa Valley, Calif./Granite Hills), Krohn and Szanto recorded a mark of 4:32.18 in the 400-yard medley relay.

The Hiram swim teams continue the conference championship meet tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 11) with the second day of events at the Branin Natatorium in Canton.  The first event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
