GAMBIER, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams opened the 2011-12 season at the annual Kenyon College Relays on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Gambier. The Terrier women finished seventh and the men were eighth. [Meet Results]
Host school Kenyon won the overall women’s competition with a team-total of 120 points. Denison University was second at 106 points and Wittenberg University was third with 74 points.
Individually for Hiram, the top performance for the women was a 12th-place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke relay. The team of senior Francesca Luppino (Medina/Cloverleaf), freshman
Rachel Buckly (Amherst/Elyria Catholic), freshman Samantha Polmantees (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) and senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) posted a combined time of 2:25.63. Also finishing in the top-15 was the team of Buckley, senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston), junior Carson Applewhite (Atherton, Calif./San Francisco) and sophomore Jessica Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy) who placed 14th in the 200-yard backstroke relay with a time of 2:07.90.
On the men’s side, Denison posted the top team score with 124 points. Kenyon was second at 106 points and The College of Wooster rounded out the top three with 49 points.
The top overall performances for the men were a pair of 12th-place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke relay and the 1500-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe), freshman Curtis Webster (Aurora), freshman Kyle Meggas (Lakewood) and sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) teamed up in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.45. Fields, Astalos and Meggas then posted a combined time of 16:44.35 in the 1500-yd free relay.
The Hiram swim teams will travel to South Euclid for a non-conference dual meet against Notre Dame College on Friday, Oct. 28. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
