HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams were defeated by The College of Wooster tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 11) in the North Coast Athletic Conference dual meet opener at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier men were defeated by the Fighting Scots by the score of, 136-99, and the women lost, 143-74. [Complete Results]
Following tonight’s action, the Hiram men are now 2-4 overall in dual meet competition and 0-1 in the NCAC. The women fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 NCAC.
The men had five different individual event winners. Freshman Job Fields (Chillicothe) recorded a top-time of 9:39.72 in the 800-meter freestyle. Senior Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) touched the wall first in the 200-meter free (2:10.36) and fellow senior Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon) posted the top overall time in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.28). Senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) had a winning mark in the 100-meter free at 55.39 seconds and senior Colin Kelly (Perrysburg) rounded out the individual event winners coming in first in the 400-meter free with a time of 4:27.33. The men also took top honors in the 200-meter free relay as the team of freshman Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge), Wegman, Kelly and Subda posted a combined time of 1:44.01.
The top individual effort for the women was a second place finish by Jackie Steffes (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) in the 50-meter free with a time of 29.98 seconds. Hiram also had a host of third-place finishes with senior Ashlynn Krohn (Wauseon) placing third in both the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.37) and the 200-meter IM (2:48.15). Junior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge) posted third place marks in the 200-meter free (2:24.27) and the 100-meter free (1:06.45). Rounding out the top individual finishes for the women was freshman Caitlin McCurley (Napa Valley, Calif./Granite Hills) who placed third in the 400-meter free in a time of 5:09.66.
The Hiram swim teams are scheduled to host Malone University on Friday, Jan. 14 in a non-conference dual meet at Alumni Memorial Pool. The women will also host Ursuline College as part of a tri-match. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
