Hiram College

The Hiram College community will raise money and awareness for cancer research at its third annual Relay for Life event, April 19-20, 2013.

Beginning at 6 p.m. on April 19 at Charles A. Henry Field, teams of students, faculty, staff and community members will walk the track in honor of cancer victims and survivors. This year’s theme for the event is Disney: “Dream Big. Hope Big. Relay Big.”

Dean of Students Eric Riedel, a cancer survivor, will give opening remarks, setting the inspirational and uplifting tone for the evening. At 9 p.m., candles will illuminate the track, as Relay participants remember and celebrate loved ones who have had, lost or continue their fight against cancer during the Luminary Ceremony. People can purchase a candle in honor of a loved one for $10 during the event or online at www.relayforlife.org/hiramcollege.

Several other special events, including raffles, a karaoke competition and soccer tournament will take place throughout the night. Closing ceremonies will mark the end of the 18-hour event at noon on April 20.

Seniors Rose Zychowski, of Lakewood, and Zach Fincham, of Windham, are the event’s co-chairs. The two, along with Zychowski’s sister Jamie, who graduated in 2012, were instrumental in bringing the first Relay event to Hiram in 2011. After this year, they will pass the tradition onto a new generation of students.

“It’s like our baby,” Fincham said. “Since we started it three years ago, it’s grown and grown, and now more people know what it is.”

Fincham said Relay for Life has helped build a sense of community at Hiram College, because nearly everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.

“It’s such an inspirational event,” he said. “When you go there, you just feel it.”

Relay for Life is an overnight event. Participants may come and go as they please, and are welcome to bring tents. Fire pits will be set up for warmth throughout the night.

Those who cannot attend the event but wish to support Hiram Relay for Life efforts can make a donation online at www.relayforlife.org/hiramcollege or buy a Relay for Life cookbook from the Hiram College bookstore.
