“Thought provoking and interesting,” is how Tom Batiuk, the creator of the comic strip “Funky Winkerbean,” characterized all 13 entries in the Center for Literature, Medicine and Biomedical Humanities’ Graphic Medicine narrative contest.

Winners of the contest, which asked students to create narratives on medical subjects using both pictures and words, were announced April 25.

Junior Aaron Andzelik, took the $250 first prize among the 13 narratives submitted, for his work “The Other Side,” while Joe Hengoed, ’12, won $100 and second place for his “My Dark passenger: A Case of the Night Terrors,” and Maci Nelson, ’15, took third prize and $50 for her “In Stitches.”

Batiuk, a Northeast Ohio native, has won accolades for dealing, from time to time, with serious subjects such as extended illness, and medical problems, in his cartoon series.

The Center has hosted three lectures on graphic medicine lectures this semester.
