Hiram College

okuma-mapworksHiram College was recently recognized by MAP-Works, an education retention and benchmarking platform, with a 2013 Excellence Award, at the organization’s national conference in Indianapolis.

The Student Life staff at Hiram College implemented MAP-Works for the freshman class in 2011, and campus-wide in 2012. The web-based program empowers faculty and staff to positively impact student success and retention by identifying at-risk students early in the term.  By combining college data and student responses to surveys, faculty and staff are able to reach out and offer support to students who may be struggling in academics or other areas of campus life.

In selecting award recipients, MAP-Works looked for the following:

  • Implementation across the campus
  • Promotion of the tool
  • Analysis of student responses and experience
  • Responsive adaptation based on student responses
  • Evidence of student success

As an overall excellence award recipient, Hiram College has succeeded in each of these areas, and proven how MAP-Works platform implementation supports students’ successful transition to college and maximizes their college experience.

“The MAP-Works tool has given students helpful insight into how they can be successful students at Hiram,” said Eric Riedel, vice president and dean of students.

One-hundred percent of the first-year students who accessed their MAP-Works report during the fall semester were able to return for the spring semester. In addition, faculty, coaches and staff report appreciation for the insights provided by MAP-Works into the non-academic issues, including finances, relational concerns, homesickness and depression, affecting student academic success.

Liz Okuma, associate vice president and associate dean of students, accepted the award at the conference. She also presented two best practice sessions, titled “From Coaches and Professors, Academic Services and Student Life…: Creating Connections Amid Faculty/Staff” and “Using Data to Inform Practice and Policy.”
