The Hiram College women’s basketball team went on a 31-8 run in the first half, en route to 71-52 victory at non-conference opponent Thiel (Pa.) on Tuesday evening.

The Terriers improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Tomcats drop to 1-7.

Hiram held a early 5-4 lead and then scored 31 of the next 39 points to open up a 34-12 lead late in the first half.

The Terriers took a 38-17 advantage into the break.

The Tomcats would trim Hiram’s lead to 48-36 midway through the second half, but two consecutive baskets from sophomore Kayla Yost (Norwalk/Perkins) pushed Hiram’s lead back to 52-36.

Thiel would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Senior Taylor Ratliff (Berea/Columbia) led the Terriers with a game and career-high 20 points. She was 5-of-10 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

Yost posted her second straight and third double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Mercedes Jones (Dayton/Ponitz Career Technology Center) added 10 points.

Hiram recorded 18 steals in the contest and forced 27 total turnovers, which resulted in 28 Terrier points.

The Terriers finished the game 24-of-60 (40.0 percent) from the field, while the Tomcats finished 17-of-46 (37.0 percent) in shooting.

Hiram will play again on December 16, when it hits the road to take on Bethany (W. Va.). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
