CLEVELAND, OHIO — The Hiram College softball team was picked to finish third of eight teams in the annual North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll that was released today (Wednesday, Feb. 23). [NCAC Preseason Coaches Poll]
Hiram was picked third for the second straight season and had 48 points and one first-place vote in this year’s poll. Denison University was chosen as the preseason favorite with 54 points and three first-place votes. Ohio Wesleyan University was second with 51 points and two first-place votes.
The Terriers finished the 2010 season with a 20-17 overall record and made a fourth consecutive appearance to the NCAC Tournament. This spring, the Terriers return 12 letterwinners and four All-Conference players in senior catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield), junior utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/ McNicholas), junior outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and sophomore designated player/first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton). Hiram will also return three seniors who have been four-year members of the program in Ervin and pitchers Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) and Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham).
Hiram will begin its season with its annual trip to Florida. This year, the Terriers will travel to Fort Myers, Fla. and will play against Bridgewater State (Mass.) College on Sunday, Mar. 6 at 9 a.m. Hiram will then face SUNY-Potsdam (N.Y.) at 11 a.m.
