FT. MYERS, FLA. — Having reached the midway point of the spring trip to Florida, the Hiram College softball team has gotten off to a quick start with a 5-1 overall record.
On Sunday, the Terriers dropped their first game against Bridgewater (Mass) State, 3-4, despite a two-for-three effort from junior outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) including a pair of homeruns. Sophomore Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) and freshman Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) also recorded a pair of hits.
The Terriers then defeated SUNY-Potsdam (N.Y.) in the second game, 14-6, in five innings. Hiram was led by Singer and junior outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) who both went three-of-four at the plate. Singer hit a homerun, scored three runs and had two RBI. Cooney scored a run and had three RBI. Four other players tallied a pair of hits in the win.
On Monday, Hiram recorded a pair of wins defeating Worcester Polytechnic (Mass.) Institute, 8-4, and beat Dominican (Ill.), 8-0, in five innings. Against WPI, Cooney led the way offensively, going four-of-five with two runs scored and two RBI. Loyer also had an impressive day going three-of-four with a run scored and a RBI.
Against Dominican, two players recorded three hits in Singer and Cooney. Singer finished a perfect three-of-three with a run scored and three RBI. Cooney went three-of-four with two RBI. In addition, freshman pitcher Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) pitched a two-hit shutout.
On Tuesday, Hiram continued its winning streak with a pair of five-inning victories, including a 12-1 win against Anna (Mass.) Maria and a 12-0 shutout against Regis (Mass.). In the win against Anna Maria, Singer and sophomore Kelcie Cuckler (Barberton) both posted two-of-three efforts at the plate. Singer also scored two runs and drove in four runs. Cuckler scored two runs and had a RBI.
Against Regis, Loyer, Singer, freshman Sarah Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) and Cuckler each recorded two hits. In addition, junior Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) hit a three-run homerun in the win.
Hiram is off on Wednesday (Mar. 9) and will resume the schedule on Thursday with a pair of games against Eastern (Mass.) Nazarene and Clark (Mass.). The Terriers will begin the day against Eastern Nazarene at 9 a.m. in Ft. Myers, Fla.
