Senior Taylor Ratliff (Berea/Columbia) scored a team-high 16 points, but the Hiram College women’s basketball team fell at Denison 59-54 on Wednesday evening.
The Terriers fall to 4-13 on the season and 0-8 in the NCAC, while the Big Red improve to 9-8, 5-3.
Ratliff also pulled down three rebounds in the contest.
Sophomore Kayla Yost (Norwalk/Perkins) added 12 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
A layup by freshman Mercedes Jones (Dayton/Ponitz Career Tehnology Center) with 7:46 left to play knotted the score at 47-47.
Denison would score the next five points to jump in front, but a 3-pointer from sophomore Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa.) would cut Hiram’s deficit to 52-50.
Yost would split a pair of free throws with 1:47 left to bring the Terriers to within 52-51.
But the Big Red would sink 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to hold the lead.
The Terriers opened up an early 6-4 lead before the Big Red used a 10-2 run to open up a 14-8 advantage.
Hiram would not allow the Big Red’s lead to grow to more than six points throughout the first half and trailed 26-20 at the break.
The Terriers went 19-of-65 (29.2 percent) from the field and were 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line. Denison finished 20-of-50 (40.0 percent) in shooting and 16-of-27 (59.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
Hiram won the rebounding battle 43-41, including a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass.
The Terriers will play next on Saturday, when they travel to take on Kenyon at 1 p.m.
