Hiram’s two-time champion Platinum Chef cooking demonstration team defends their title on the road Thursday April 19th against four rival colleges in the AVI Fresh Ohio Platinum Chef Competition at the University of Mount Union.
During the competition, teams from AVI schools in the Midwest Ohio region will compete for a chance to win $2,500. Competing schools include, Kenyon College, Malone University, Tiffin University and The University of Mount Union.
Hiram’s team, Zareek Ahmed, ’13, Zach Fincham, ’13, Zoe Apisdorf, ’12, Jamie Zychowski, ’12, and her sister and team captain Rose Zychowski, ’13, have triumphed the first two years the competition has been held, and qualified last month to defend their statewide title by outpacing five challenging teams from Hiram in the local Hiram Platinum Chef Competition.
Each team will consist of five students and an AVI Fresh chef advisor from that institution. Teams are required to create three dishes, with each dish showcasing a mystery ingredient. Teams will be judged on their ability to demonstrate teamwork, presentation, flavor, creativity and sanitation skills.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday in the University of Mount Union’s Kresge Dining Commons. Celebrity chef Hiroko Shimbo, worldwide-recognized sushi chef, author, media performer and chef instructor will do a chef demo and reveal the mystery ingredient, as well as judging the teams’ creations.
