Hiram College

Hiram College is a place where students can thrive in their entrepreneurial endeavors. This year, the Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship is introducing a new opportunity for students to earn money to develop an enterprise that has a positive social impact.

This new challenge, the MAD Money (Make a Difference) Award, comes thanks to alumnus Bob Coppedge ’01. Coppedge began his Hiram studies during the seventies and graduated in 2001 through the Weekend College. While he was a student during the seventies, he attempted to start a business. Although he was unsuccessful (in this particular endeavor), the fact that Hiram provided a safe place for him to try new things stuck with him over the years, and he now wants to encourage current students to do the same.

Students who want to pitch their ideas for social change can attend an informational meeting about the challenge at 5 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2015 in East Hall Forum. All Hiram students – including traditional undergraduates, adult students, graduate students and students enrolled in community college partnership programs – are encouraged to participate. On Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in East Hall Forum, a workshop will help students develop their ideas and proposals. Up to six selected students or groups will then compete at 5 p.m. on Nov. 10, for the MAD Money Competition. The winning student or team of students will take home $1,000, and the second place team, $500, to help develop their ideas.

Coppedge, with his wife Julie, made the gift funding this competition in memory of his sister Laura Coppedge ’79 and his mother Patricia Coppedge, who both dedicated their lives to making the world a better place. Coppedge now owns the successful information technology company Simplex-IT in Hudson, Ohio. He hopes students will learn from the ideas they pitch in the competition, even if they aren’t initially successful.

Students interested in participating in the MAD Money Competition can learn more online. The Center for Integrated Entrepreneurship also hosts the idea competitions ideablitz! and ideabuild! each year.
