On Thursday, February 10, the Hiram College Music Department will offer three convocations that deal with various aspects of piano performance, history, and pedagogy. This event will take place in Frohring Recital Hall at 12:00 noon.
Assistant Professor Dr. Dawn Sonntag and Professor Randall Fusco will present a recital of four-hand piano music by Schubert, Debussy, Fauré, Dello Joio, Grieg, Brahms, and Dvo?ák. Sonntag and Fusco will also speak on the pleasures and challenges of piano duet playing.
On Tuesday, February 15, Randall Fusco will present Great Pianists of a Bygone Era, in which he will discuss the impact of pianists such as Dame Myra Hess, Ignaz Friedman, Dinu Lipatti, and Sergei Rachmaninoff on the artists of today. Fusco will also share historic recordings of these remarkable artists.
Finally, on Thursday, February 17, Dr. Caroline Oltmanns, Professor of Piano at the Dana School of Music of Youngstown State University, will present a master class, in which she will coach two pianists in the art of interpreting the piano works by Claude Debussy. The performers will be Hiram College student Tomoyuki Fujiimoto ’14 and Hiram community student Matthew Vandershuur.
All of these events are free and open to the public.
