CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. — The Hiram College men’s soccer team tallied two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to get past Wabash College, 3-1, today (Saturday, Sept. 25) in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener in Crawfordsville, Ind. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC. The Little Giants fall to 5-4 overall and 0-1 NCAC.
Wabash struck first early in the first half with a goal at the 6:13 minute mark off the foot of Allan Swan to give the Little Giants a 1-0 lead. Hiram tied the game at 1-1 during the 18th minute with a goal from two-time All-NCAC forward Petar Knezevic (Akron/Ellet), his team-leading sixth of the season, with an assist from freshman defenseman Luke Salmen (Strongsville). Neither team would score again during the remainder of the half as both teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.
In the second half, Hiram took the lead with a goal from Salmen at the 86:43 mark with an assist from sophomore All-NCAC midfielder Ryan Greenhill (Solon). The Terriers added an insurance goal in the final seconds of the game from senior midfielder George Schatz (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) giving Hiram a 3-1 victory. Senior goaltender Joe Tatum (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/St. George’s School) would be credited with an assist on the Schatz goal.
Tatum played all 90 minutes in net for Hiram and claimed his third win of the season to improve to 3-6 overall. He allowed the lone goal and made four saves.
Hiram will look to keep the momentum going when it travels to Latrobe, Pa. for a non-conference game against St. Vincent’s College on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
