MEADVILLE, PA. — Sophomore forward Zaire Morrison (Boardman) scored a pair of goals to help lead the Hiram College men’s soccer team past La Roche (Pa.) College, 5-2, in its final game of the Allegheny (Pa.) College Tournament in Meadville, Pa.
With the win, the Terriers finish the first weekend of the season with a pair of victories for a 2-0 overall mark. The Redhawks fall to 0-2 overall for the year.
La Roche took the early lead with a goal just over the five minute mark from Ryan Luffey for a 1-0 advantage. The lead wouldn’t last long as Hiram evened the score at 1-1 a little more than a minute later thanks to a score by junior midfielder Andy Harding (Bath/Revere) with an assist from senior All-Region forward Ryan Minick (North Royalton). The goal started a string of five unanswered goals by the Terriers, including a goal by senior midfielder/forward Kevin Haramis (Norton) that gave Hiram the lead, 2-1, during the 18th minute. Senior midfielder Ty Smith (Rocky River/St. Ignatius) was credited with the assist on the Haramis goal. Hiram tallied two more scores in the first period, both coming from Morrison at the 28:53 and 38:37 minute marks. Morrison’s first goal would turn out to be the game winner and was assisted by junior midfielder Alejandro Ruiz (Georgetown/Cayman Islands). Smith recorded his second assist of the game on Morrison’s second score which gave Hiram a 4-1 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, Hiram scored its final goal during the 50th minute off the foot of sophomore midfielder Andres Ruiz (Georgetown/Cayman Islands), with a helper from Haramis, increasing the Terrier margin to 5-1. La Roche recorded the final goal of the game at the 65:39 mark from Tyler Balzer, but the Hiram lead was too great as the Terriers went on to a 5-2 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Minite (Aurora) played all 90 minutes in his Hiram debut and got his first win of the season. He allowed two goals and made seven saves.
Following the tournament, Harding was named to the All-Tournament team as well as being named the co-Most Valuable Player. In addition, Smith, senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference defenseman Daniel O’Callaghan (Aberdale, Wales, United Kingdom) and senior All-Region midfielder Ryan Greenhill (Solon) were all selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Hiram will look to keep the early momentum going when it hosts Principia (Ill.) College on Friday, Sept. 7 in the home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
