HIRAM, OHIO — Earlier this month, Hiram College men’s soccer player and sophomore defenseman, Benji Cupid (West Bay, Cayman Islands) represented his home nation in a pair of qualifying games for the 2014 World Cup that will be played in Brazil from June 12 to July 13, 2014.
Cupid was a starting defenseman in both games he played in for the Cayman Island National Team, playing all 90 minutes in both contests. In his first game on Sept. 2, Cayman Islands fell to Suriname by the final of 1-0 and also fell short against El Salvador, 4-1. Cupid is the third player on Hiram’s men’s soccer team who has played for his national team, but the first to play in World Cup Qualifiers. Graduated seniors Trevor Gibbs (Georgetown, Cayman Islands), an All-North Coast Athletic Conference defenseman for the Terriers, played in the Caribbean Championships (Digicel Cup) and All-NCAC goalkeeper Joe Tatum (Georgetown, Cayman Islands) played in Olympic Qualifiers.
