HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s soccer team fell to No. 1 nationally-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College, 3-0, this afternoon (Saturday, Sept. 18) in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 2-5 overall and the Knights improve to 6-0 overall for the season.
Calvin outshot Hiram, 18-7, for the game, but would not find the net until the 33:21 minute mark of the opening half with a score by Dan Kmetz to give the Knights a 1-0 edge after one period of play.
The margin remained just a goal until late in the second half, when Calvin scored a pair of goals in the span of 3:55 beginning with a goal by Brad Heethuis at the 83:45 mark to increase the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Knights. Calvin then scored its final goal of the game during the 88th minute by Joe Broekhuizen en route to the 3-0 shutout.
Senior goalkeeper Joe Tatum (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/St. George’s School) played all 90 minutes for Hiram, but suffered the loss and is now 2-5 overall for the season. He allowed three goals and made one save.
Hiram will play its next four games on the road, beginning with a non-conference matchup against Heidelberg University on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in Tiffin. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
