DANVILLE, KY. — Senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Petar Knezevic (Akron/Ellet) scored both goals as the Hiram College men’s soccer team got its first win of the season in a 2-1 victory against Transylvania (Ky.) University in the first game of the Centre College Classic today (Friday, Sept. 10) in Danville, Ky. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 1-3 overall. Transylvania, who advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite 8 last season, drop to 2-1 for the year.
The Pioneers scored early with a goal at the 4:06 minute mark from Kyle Smith to give Transylvania a 1-0 edge. Later in the half, Knezevic scored his first goal of the game during the 31st minute to even the score at 1-1. Neither team would score the remainder of the half and both teams went into the locker rooms tied at 1-1.
In the second half, Knezevic broke the tie midway through the period, with his team-leading fourth goal of the season, and second of the game, at the 65:42 mark giving the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Knezevic is the only Hiram player so far this season to score any goals. Solid defense led by freshman goalkeeper J.J. Crowley (Niles/McKinley) held the Pioneers from scoring the equilizer and held on for a 2-1 victory.
Both teams tallied 21 shots and Hiram had a slit edge in shots on goal, 11-10.
Crowley picked up his first win of the season in net and is now 1-0 overall. He played all 90 minutes allowing one goal and was credited with nine saves.
Hiram will conclude the two-day event with a matchup against host school Centre College tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 11). The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
