MEADVILLE, PA. — Senior forward Taylor Kiefer (North Canton/Hoover) scored a goal and two assists and junior midfielder Andy Harding (Bath/Revere) scored a pair of goals as the Hiram College men’s soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 4-1 win against Wilmington College in its first game of the Allegheny College Tournament in Meadville, Pa.
With the win, the Terriers are 1-0 overall and the Quakers fall to 0-1 for the season.
Wilmington scored its only goal, and the first of the game, at the 16:19 mark by Cody Sabins to give the Quakers an early 1-0 lead. Hiram then scored four unanswered goals beginning with Kiefer’s goal during the 33rd minute to even the score at a goal apiece. Senior All-Region forward Ryan Minick (North Royalton) was credited with an assist. The Terriers took the lead shortly after at the 35:05 mark off the foot of senior All-Region midfielder Ryan Greenhill(Solon) on a penalty kick making the score 2-1. Greenhill’s goal would be the last of the opening period as Hiram had a slim 2-1 margin at the break.
In the second half, both of Hiram’s goals were scored by Harding with the first coming during the 49th minute and then again during the 61st minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Both of Harding’s scores were assisted by Kiefer as the Terriers went on to win by the three-goal margin.
Senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference goalkeeper Joe Rottinger (Strongsville) played all 90 minutes to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed just the lone goal and made three saves.
Hiram will play against La Roche (Pa.) College tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 2) in the final game of the Allegheny College Tournament in Meadville, Pa. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
