Freshman Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) scored six goals to help lead the Hiram College men’s lacrosse team to its first program victory in a 14-9 win against DePauw (Ind.) University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener in Greencastle, Ind.

DePauw scored the first goal of the game just over 30 seconds into the first quarter.  Summers talled his first goal of the game shortly after at the 12:35 minute mark with an assist from senior Caleb Capron (Salem/West Branch), to even the score at 1-1.  The Tigers then scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 advantage with 4:59 left in the period.  The Terriers posted a pair of goals to end the scoring in the quarter with both goals coming from Summers, to make the score 5-3 at the end of one.

The two teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter.  Hiram then recorded four straight goals of their own to end the half, with two score from freshman Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) and goals from sophomore Aaron Hare (Rocky River) and Summers that gave the Terriers an 8-6 margin at halftime.

Hiram continued the offensive attack in the third quarter scoring four goals to extend the advantage to 12-6.  DePauw then made a charge with three straight scores to cut the deficit to 12-9.  But the Terriers scored the final goal of the quarter when Lekan found the back of the net for the second time in the period, setting up a 13-9 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Hiram tallied the only score on another goal by Lekan with 13:11 left to play.  The Terrier defense held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way led by freshman goalkeeper Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) as Hiram went on to post the 14-9 victory.

Hiram was led offensively by Lekan who finished with a seven-point day scoring five goals and two assists.  Summers scored a team-high six goals for six points and freshman John Deegan(Lakewood/St. Edward) was third in scoring with a goal and three assists for four points.  Capron and Hare rounded out the point scorers with a goal each.

In net for the Terriers, Lott played all 60 minutes to record his first win of the season and had 12 saves.

Hiram will host The College of Wooster on Tuesday, Mar. 26 in a NCAC contest at Charles A. Henry Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
