Hiram College

Freshmen Thomas Kuczma (Brunswick) and Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) both scored a pair of goals and added an assist, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College men’s lacrosse team fell to Bethany (W.Va.), 15-10, in a non-conference game at Bison Stadium in Bethany, W.Va.

Bethany (2-4) scored the game’s first goal at the 13:58 minute mark, but Hiram (0-3) freshman Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) tied the game 11 seconds later with an assist from freshman John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward).  The two teams continued to exchange goals with Hiram’s next score coming from sophomore Aaron Hare (Rocky River) at the 8:43 mark of the first quarter, with an assist from Kuczma, to make the score 2-2.  But the Bison found the net three more times in the period to end the scoring and have a 5-2 advantage.

In the second quarter, Bethany padded its lead with a pair of goals for a 7-2 margin.  Hiram netted the next two scores with goals from Kuczma and senior Caleb Capron (Salem/West Branch) to make the score 7-4 with 7:54 left before halftime.  The Bison answered the two Terrier goals with two scores of their own to extend the lead back to five goals, 9-4, at the break.

The third quarter began with two goals by Bethany.  Deegan tallied the first goal of the second half for Hiram at the 12:19 mark to cut the deficit to 11-5.  Following another Bison score, Kuczma recorded his second goal of the game in a man down situation to end the scoring in the period, but Hiram still trailed, 12-6, heading into the fourth quarter.

Hiram outscored Bethany, 4-3, in the final 15 minutes with two of the Terrier goals coming from Lekan in addition to goals from Summers and senior Ty Smith (Rocky River/St. Ignatius).  But after 60 minutes, it was the Bison who came out on top with the final score of 15-10.

Offensively, Hiram was led by Kuczma and Lekan with two goals and an assist.  Summers was second with two goals.   Deegan finished the game with a goal and two assists, while Aaron Hare rounded out the point scorers with a goal.

In net for Hiram, freshman Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) started the game and played 45 minutes making eight saves on 20 shots faced.  Fellow freshman Mike Malloy (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) played the final 15 minutes posting three saves on six shots faced.

Hiram will host the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, Mar. 20 at Charles A. Henry Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
