Hiram College

All-North Coast Athletic Conference sophomore Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) scored three goals as the Hiram College men’s lacrosse team began the 2014 season with an 8-4 win against Franciscan University.

Hiram (1-0) scored the only two goals of the first quarter with sophomore Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) scoring the game’s first goal at the 10:50 minute mark with an assist from fellow sophomore John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward).  Just before the end of the period, the Terriers struck again.  This time with an unassisted goal by freshman Douglas Legris (Fairfax, Verm./Bellows Free Academy) to give Hiram a 2-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

Franciscan (1-3) got on the board early in the second quarter on a man-up opportunity to cut the Hiram lead in half, 2-1.  Hiram then tallied two unanswered goals, one from Summers and another goal by Lekan.  Both scores were unassisted as the Terriers took a 4-1 margin in halftime.

In the third quarter, the Barons scored twice to pull to within a goal, 4-3 with 11:04 to go in the period.  The Terriers took control with four straight scores, including back-to-back goals by Summers at the 3:28 and 3:04 marks.  Deegan would be credited with an assist on Summers’ first goal before finding the back of the net himself with 33 seconds left to make the score 7-3.  Freshman Garet Johnston (Kent/Wooster) rounded out the scoring in the quarter, with an assist from junior Chris Minite(Aurora), that gave Hiram an 8-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

Franciscan scored the only points in the final 15 minutes, but it would only be one goal as Hiram would go on to claim the 8-4 victory.

In net for Hiram, sophomore Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) played all 60 minutes allowing four goals and making 17 saves in 21 shots faced.

Hiram is scheduled to host Thiel (pa.) College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Mar. 12 in the home opener at Charles A. Henry Field.  The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
