HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s golf team competed in a pair of one-round, 18-hole mini tournaments this past Saturday-Sunday (Sept. 11-12) at different locations around Northeast Ohio. The Terriers competed in the three-team Walsh University Fall Invitational on Saturday at Rain Tree Golf Course in Uniontown and placed fourth overall, and then hosted the Hiram College Fall Invitational at Sugarbush Golf Course in Garrettsville on Sunday and also placed fourth overall. In the Walsh Invitational, Hiram finished with an 18-hole team total of 359 strokes to place fourth of four teams. John Carroll University “A” Team won the event with a total of 308 strokes. The Blue Streak “B” team finished second at 317 strokes and host school Walsh placed third with 326 strokes.
Individually for Hiram, freshman Chad Casey (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) led the Terreirs with a round of 82 strokes (40+42=82) and placed in a tie for 10th overall out of 33 golfers. Fellow freshman Ethan Tope (Dalton/Waynedale) was second with 86 strokes (40+46=86) and junior Bob Ritchie (Strongsville/Brunswick) was third at 94 strokes (48+46=94). Senior Andy Deehr (Cortland/Champion) and sophomore Zach Baker (Lewis Center) rounded out the team-scoring with rounds of 97 strokes each respectively. Also competing for Hiram as individuals were freshman David Miller (Avon Lake) who carded a 94 (51+43=94), freshman Mark Guarnera (Chardon/Berkshire) shot a 95 (50+45=95), senior Jon Rice (Toledo/Sylvania/Southview) finished the round at 101 strokes (49+52=101), junior Corey Trusso (Ravenna) posted a 106 (48+58=106) and senior Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) rounded out the Hiram competitors with a round of 116 strokes (58+58=116).
In the Hiram Invitational, the Terriers placed fourth of four teams with an 18-hole total of 337 strokes. The JCU “A” and “B” teams captured first and second places with totals of 314 and 323 strokes, while Walsh finished third at 333 strokes.
Making up the Hiram individual scoring was Casey who led the Terriers for the second straight day, posting a one-round total of 79 strokes (40+39=79) and placed in a tie for sixth overall out of 29 golfers. Ritchie recorded the second lowest score for the team with 82 strokes (41+41=82). Tope was third with a round of 86 strokes (40+46=86) and Deehr was fourth at 89 strokes (45+44=89). Baker rounded out the Hiram scorers with a total of 90 strokes (49+41=90). In addition, Miller turned in a round of 90 strokes (44+46=90) in his second collegiate round of golf. Guarnera finished the day with a 91 (49+42=91), while Rice turned in a 101 (51+50=101). Subda finished just behind Rice with a 102 (55+47=102) and Walton and Trusso completed the list of competitors with rounds of 105 (55+50=105) and 106 (51+55=106) respectively.
The Hiram men’s golf team is scheduled to compete today (Monday, Sept. 13) in another 18-hole event hosted by John Carroll University at Wicked Woods Golf Course in Newbury.
