The Hiram College men’s basketball team suffered an 84-70 loss against Waynesburg (Pa.) University in a non-conference game in Waynesburg, Pa.
Waynesburg (5-5) jumped out to an early 8-2 lead to begin the first half, but Hiram (2-6) would answer with an 8-4 scoring run to make it a one possession game, 12-10, following a layup by sophomore guard Austen Rekolt (Salem/West Branch) at the 13:53 mark. The Terriers eventually tied the game at 14-14 on a pair of free-throws by sophomore forward Riley Moore(Grafton/Midview) and later had a slim three-point lead late in the period, 27-24, thanks to two free-throws by senior guard Matt Roman (North Olmsted) with 3:53 to go before halftime. But Waynesburg came right back with a 10-0 run to regain the lead, 34-27, and had a 34-30 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, the score remained close until another 10-0 run by Waynesburg nearing the midway point of the period gave the Yellow Jackets a 53-38 margin with 14:03 left to play. Waynesburg gradually began to pull away the rest of the period and went on to lead by as many as 20 points, 84-64, with under a minute to go en route to going on to the 84-70 final.
Waynesburg shot 45.7 percent (32-of-70) for the game and had four players in double figures led by Jason Propst with a game-high 23 points. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. B.J. Durham was second with 13 points and Jacob Fleegle added 12 points. Rounding out the high scorers for the Yellow Jackets was Nate Libishak with 11 points.
Hiram shot 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the field and had one player score in double digits in freshman guard Andre Serra (Coconut Creek, Fla./Monarch) with 11 points on three-of-seven shooting (42.9 percent).
Hiram will be idle until Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 28-29 for the “M” Club Classic hosted by the University of Mount Union in Alliance. The Terriers will play against Olivet (Mich.) College in their game on Saturday which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
