WOOSTER, OHIO — A late second-half scoring run led to the Hiram College men’s basketball team falling to No. 4 nationally-ranked The College of Wooster, 74-60, tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 1) in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener in Wooster. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. The Fighting Scots improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 NCAC.
Wooster never trailed in the first half, but could not take control of the game despite recording a lead of 12 points, 27-15, at the 7:10 minute mark. Hiram would not go away and cut the deficit to four points on two occassions during the remainder of the period, including a halftime score of 38-34.
In the second half, Hiram scored the first five points to take a 39-38 lead on a three-pointer by senior two-time All-NCAC guard Chris Roberts (Cleveland/Kennedy) with 18:05 left in the game. The Scots regained the lead, but the Terriers stayed within striking distance until the 12:09 mark when Wooster scored 12 unanswered points as part of an 18-2 run to record its largest lead of the game of 18 points, 66-48, at the 6:02 mark. The margin would be all that Wooster would need to go on to a 74-60 victory.
The Scots shot an impressive 51.0 percent (26-of-51) from the floor and held the Terriers to 30.9 percent (21-of-68) shooting.
Wooster was led in scoring by Ian Franks with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting (58.8 percent). Justin Warnes was second with 12 points and Bryan Wickliffe and Ryan Snyder both added 10 points.
Hiram was led by senior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) with 19 points on six-of-13 shooting (46.1 percent), including a perfect seven-of-seven from the free-throw line. He also grabbed a game-tying high seven rebounds. Senior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) was the only other Terrier in double figures with 12 points.
Hiram will host Wabash (Ind.) College on Saturday, Dec. 4 in a NCAC game at Price Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
