GROVE CITY, PA. — The Hiram College men’s basketball team defeated Grove City College, 65-54, tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 15) in a non-conference game at Grove City College Arena in Grove City, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 6-4 overall and the Wolverines fall to 4-5 overall for the season.
The first half remained close in the early minutes with both teams exchanging leads. Hiram got some breathing room near the midway point of the period with an 11-0 scoring run that ended in a three-pointer by junior guard Andrew Wiegand (Amherst/Firelands) that made the score, 17-7, with 10:43 left in the half. Grove City answered with six straight points of its own to pull to within four points, 17-13, at the 8:06 mark. The Terriers then outscored the Wolverines, 23-12, during the remainder of the half to lead by as many as 15 points with the halftime score of 40-25.
Hiram never relinquished its double-digit lead in the second half and led by as many as 18 points, 61-43, thanks to a triple by freshman guard Aaron Stefanov (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) with 5:49 left to play as the Terriers went to win by the final of 65-54.
Grove City was led in scoring by Jeff Newell with a game-tying high 16 points on six-of-10 shooting (60.0 percent). He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Rounding out the high scorers was Brett Matson with 10 points.
Hiram was led by senior guard Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) with a game-tying high 16 points on six-of-10 shooting (60.0 percent). Wiegand was the only other Terrier in double figures with 10 points.
Hiram will end its four-game road trip on Saturday (Dec. 18) when it travels to University Circle for a non-conference game against Case. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
