MEADVILLE, PA. — The Hiram College men’s basketball team defeated Allegheny College in convincing fashion, 72-57, tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 9) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Meadville, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 11-11 overall and 5-8 in the NCAC. The Gators fall to 5-17 overall and 2-12 NCAC.
Hiram took control early beginning the game with a 11-0 scoring run that included a pair of three-pointers by freshman guard Aaron Stefanov (Stow/Stow-Munore Falls). The Terriers continued their dominating play and led by as many as 25 points at the 5:21 mark thanks to a jumper by junior guard Andrew Wiegand (Amherst/Firelands) making the score 45-20. Hiram would go on to take a 52-29 edge at the break.
In the second half, Hiram posted its largest margin of 32 points, 69-37, on a pair of free-throws by senior forward Babajide Eniola (Washington, D.C./Seed Charter) with 11:28 left to play. Allegheny outscored 12-0 in the final 5:27 of the game as both teams cleared their benches, but the Terriers already had the game in hand and went on to claim a 72-57 victory.
Allegheny had one player score in double-digits in James Ness who scored a game-high 15 points on six-of-eight shooting (75.0 percent).
Hiram was led in scoring by Wiegand with 14 points on five-of-nine shooting (55.6 percent), including four-of-seven (57.1 percent) from three-point range. Stefanov was second with 13 points and junior forward Chris Meyer (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) added 10 points.
Hiram will conclude its three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 12 when the Terriers travel to Crawfordsville, Ind. for a NCAC game against No. 13 nationally-ranked Wabash College. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
