Hiram College

les-roberts-headshotNovelist Les Roberts will give a reading of his newest book Win, Place or Die, at noon on Sept. 10, 2013, in the Library’s Pritchard Room.

Win, Place or Die has a special connection to Hiram College, as it features a fictional Hiram College professor as a central character. Roberts became acquainted with Hiram College when, after speaking on campus, a faculty member recognized him at a restaurant and jazz club in Cleveland and encouraged him to become part of campus life. He then fell in love with Hiram’s “charming learning atmosphere,” inspiring him to make Hiram a part of one of his novels.

While writing the book, Roberts toured campus with Jenifer Warren, associate director of major gifts, so he could accurately portray the feel and essence of Hiram.

Roberts is best known for his Cleveland-based mystery series featuring Slovenian detective Milan Jacovich. Roberts started his career as an actor in Chicago and then wrote for The Jackie Gleason Show while living in New York. In time he moved to Hollywood, where he produced The Hollywood Squares and wrote for and produced The Lucy Show, The Andy Griffith Show and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. While in Los Angeles, Roberts began the Milan Jacovich series, which won him the Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature. In 2003 he won the Sherwood Anderson Literary Prize. He has served as the president of the Private Eye Writers of America and as the president of the American Crime Writers League. About twenty years ago, Roberts settled in the Cleveland area, his “spiritual home,” where he writes and plays jazz piano.

Les Roberts’ visit is sponsored by the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature.
