ADRIAN, MICH. — Freshman All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/utility Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) recorded the go-ahead runs on a grand slam as part of a 14-run bottom of the fourth inning as the Hiram College softball team kept it’s NCAA Division III tournament hopes alive with a 19-7 defeat of Trine (Ind.) University in five innings today (Sunday, May 15) in an elimination game hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Mich. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 28-14 overall mark, setting a school single-season record for wins in a season, and advance to take on DePauw (Ind.) University in a rematch later today. The Thunder end their season with a 30-13 overall mark.
Trine grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but Hiram came right back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a RBI single by sophomore All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Bath/Revere) to tie the game at 1-1. The Thunder took the lead back with a five-run second inning to go up by a 6-1 advantage and added another run in the third to increase the margin to 7-1. But the Terriers would make some noise in the bottom of the inning scoring four runs on a balk and a pair of RBI singles, including a two-RBI single by sophomore utility player Kelcie Cuckler (Barberton) to make the score 7-5. Hiram took the lead in the fourth, all with two outs, and included a bases loaded grand slam by freshman All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/utility player Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) that gave the Terriers the advantage. Lane also hit a RBI-double later in the inning. Hiram would send 20 batters to the plate in the fourth and had bases loaded three more times later in the at-bat and went on to score 14 runs in the frame. The Terriers ended up leading 19-7 after four innings of play. Hiram tallied two straight outs to start the top of the fifth and following a defensive error, the Terriers recorded the final out via strikeout sealing a 19-7 come-from-behind victory in five innings.
Hiram totaled 12 hits in the game and was led by Lane who finished a perfect three-of-three with three runs scored and six RBI. Junior All-NCAC outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) also had a multi-hit game going two-of-three with three runs scored and a RBI. Seven other Terriers each recorded a base hit in the win.
Lane pitched the entire game to claim the victory and improve to 16-8 for the season. She allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out five batters.
Hiram advances back to the winner’s bracket and will square off against DePauw (Ind.) University later today for the second time in the Championship round. The Terriers will need to defeat the Tigers twice to claim the regional championship and advance to the softball world series. Gametime is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m.
