Christian Walker ’16 was recently given the extraordinary opportunity to attend the 2015 Conference of the National Society of Black Physicists on full sponsorship.
This annual conference, held Feb. 25-28, 2015, in Baltimore, brought together a broad range of physics experts, giving participants a look at a wide variety of avenues for their future careers.
The first day at the conference, selected students did poster presentations on work they are currently doing in the field.
“It allowed me to see what my peers were studying, and it was a good way to hear a critique from professional members of my field of study,” Walker said.
In the evenings, workshops were held that gave students a more hands on approach.
“I went to an IT workshop since I didn’t know much about IT in the physics world, and I got to experience a new side of physics,” he said. “It was a very cool opportunity.”
Laura Von Wormer, professor of physics, assisted Walker, a physics major from Struthers, Ohio, in submitting his application. He was one of two students, out of 246 applicants, chosen for full sponsorship by the Hilton Baltimore Hotel, which covered the costs of his flight, hotel and registration expenses.
“I had a leg up on all other applicants,” Walker said. “Going to a small school like Hiram College led them to sponsoring my event.”
The conference included an assortment of keynote speakers during luncheons and dinners. During the day, participants had the leisure to walk from room to room and listen to different types of physicists discuss their work.
“I learned a lot about different parts of physics and possible opportunities that I could have with my physics degree,” Walker said, adding that he met a lot of people and learned a lot about others in his field.
He gave thanks the Hiram College Physics Department; if not for their assistance and concern for students he would not be as far as he is in his education, he said.
“The professors in the Physics Department give us every opportunity they can to try to help us succeed in our major,” Walker said. “They provide us with so many resources and help us in any way they can.”
