Hiram College

Residents at the Inn at the Pines, an assisted living and memory care facility in Hiram, recently watched stories of their lives unfold, thanks to an assignment given to students in a journalism class with David Strukel, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication. Dr. Strukel partnered with the Pines at the beginning of the fall 2019 semester to provide his students with hands-on experience interviewing individuals outside of their own peer group. Students were paired with a resident from the Pines to interview and then tasked with producing a video about that individual’s life.

The task at hand became much more than an assignment. Impressed with the work of the students, the administration at the Pines hosted a viewing night and cookie exchange for the resident’s and their families. Additionally, they were given a copy of the video produced by the students, a keepsake just in time for the holidays.

Read more about the collaboration between Dr. Strukel’s class and the Pines in recent feature in the Record-Courier.
