Freshman Kelvin Jones (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) scored 12 points, but the Hiram College men’s basketball team dropped a home decision to DePauw (Ind.) by a 75-61 score on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers drop to 9-12 on the season and 3-11 in the NCAC, while the Tigers push their record to 15-6, 8-6.
Jones finished 5-of-6 from the field and also pulled down seven rebounds.
DePauw came out of the gate strong and scored nine of the first 11 points to build an early 9-2 lead.
The Tigers would expand their lead to 21-12, before a 7-2 run, capped off by a layup from juniorAusten Rekolt (Salem/West Branch), brought Hiram to within 23-19 with 10:13 left in the first half.
DePauw would come right back with a 7-2 run of its own to expand their lead to 30-21. The Tigers would take a 42-31 lead into the intermission.
The Tigers would use a 10-0 run midway through the second half to open up a 62-41 advantage.
Deckerd would drain two straight 3-pointers to bring the Terriers back to within 62-47, but DePauw answered with the next six points to put the game away.
The Terriers shot 23-of-50 (46.0 percent) from the field and were 9-of-10 (90.0 percent) in free throws. The Tigers finished 27-of-56 (48.2 percent) in shooting and were 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
DePauw held a slim 30-29 advantage in the rebounding battle and outscored Hiram 38-24 in the paint.
The Terriers will play next on Wendesday, when they travel to take on No. 20 Wooster. The game is the second of a double header and will tip-off at approximately 8 p.m.
