HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s basketball team shot a scorching 66.7 percent (20-of-30) in the first half, including 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from three-point range, as the Terriers posted a 92-64 victory against Grove City (Pa.) College tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 14) in a non-conference game at Price Gymnasium. Hiram ended up taking a school-record tying 32 three-point attempts which also came against Grove City back in 2006-07. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 4-3 overall and the Wolverines fall to 4-5 overall for the season.
Hiram came out firing in the first half and made thier first four three-point attempts which included back-to-back triples by sophomore guard Aaron Stefanov (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) to put the Terriers up 14-4 early in the period with 16:23 left before halftime. But Grove City would not go quietly, answering with an 11-3 scoring run to pull to within a basket, 17-15, at the 12:23 mark. The Terriers answered the Wolverine run with a run of their own, outscoring Grove City, 19-6, to extend the margin back to double-figures, 36-21, with 7:19 remaining. Hiram never looked back the rest of the half as the hot shooting continued and the Terriers built a 27-point margin on two occassions, including a 56-29 advantage thanks to three free-throws by junior guard Tom Herchek (Randolph/Waterloo) with 50 seconds left in the opening period. Grove City recorded the final points of the half, but would still trail, 58-35, at the break.
The Terrier lead was never in doubt in the second half as Hiram didn’t allow the Wolverines to get closer than 18 points. Hiram went on to record its largest lead of the game of 29 points, 85-56, with 7:55 left in the game on a jumper by sophomore guard Josh Emondson (Euclid/Twinsburg) en route to the 92-64 final.
Hiram ended up shooting 49.3 percent (34-of-69) from the field for the game, including 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from behind the arc. Grove City shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the floor. The Terriers also outrebounded the Wolverines, 42-29.
Grove City was led in scoring by Mitch Marmelstein with 16 points on seven-of-13 shooting (53.8 percent). Rob Zewe was the only other double-digit scorer for the Wolverines with 15 points.
Hiram had four players score in double-figures led by Stefanov’s game-high 17 points on six-of-nine shooting (66.7 percent) and five-of-six (83.3 percent) from three-point range. Herchek was second with 16 points and senior guard Jamaal Watkins (South Euclid/Brush) was third with 15 points to go along with a game-high seven rebounds. Rounding out the high scorers was junior guard Alan Sheppard (Wadsworth) with 10 points.
Hiram will travel to Washington, Pa. for a non-conference game against Washington & Jefferson College on Sunday, Dec. 18. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
