Hiram College

The Hiram College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will celebrate its  40th anniversary on Wednesday March 16,2011 with a lecture from Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Prof. Doug McAdam of Stanford  University. Prof. McAdam is a sociologist whose areas of interest include social movements and civic engagement. His public lecture “The Long-term Civic Impact of Youth Activism: The Curious Contrast Between Freedom Summer and Teach for America” will be held at 7:30 in the Hiram College Library.  Prof McAdam will meet with classes and student groups while on campus. The Hiram College Chapter is the only Phi Beta Kappa Chapter in the region awarded an opportunity to host a Visiting Scholar this year.

Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. It is the premier honor society for students of the liberal arts and sciences. Invitations to join Phi Beta Kappa are offered to students who demonstrate superior scholastic achievement, a knowledge of a foreign language and familiarity with mathematical concepts.  A broad distribution of courses in the liberal arts and sciences is required.The Hiram College Chapter, Mu of Ohio, was established in 1971 and is one of only 280 Phi Beta Kappa Chapters in the country.
