Hiram College graduating student athlete, Jacob Kowal ’24, history major with minors in writing and political science, was recently awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. According to the NCAA, “scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.”

Each athletic season, 21 male and 21 female student athletes from NCAA affiliated colleges and universities are awarded scholarships to pursue graduate school in a part-time or full-time manner. Students are nominated to receive a scholarship from their institution’s Faculty Athletics Representatives.

Mallory Kobak, Ph.D., associate professor of integrative exercise science; Willard Greenwood, Ph.D., professor of English; Scott Pohlman, director of athletics; and Taylor Roth, head men’s basketball coach, collaborated to nominate Kowal for his exemplary performance in the classroom and on the basketball court. This is the first time since the turn of the century in Hiram’s history that a student athlete from the College has been selected for this award.

“I’m thrilled for Jacob to receive the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship,” Roth told Hiram Athletics. “Jacob was a true student-athlete in his four years at Hiram and has left a great impact on the College as well as our men’s basketball program. Our younger players will benefit from the example he set in how he pursued athletics and academics at an equally high level. I have no doubt Jacob will do great things through his graduate work at Notre Dame and beyond.”

Kowal plans to attend the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business starting in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Master of Business Analytics with a focus in sports analytics.

Through his four years at Hiram, Kowal was a four-year member of men’s basketball and a two-time team captain. He also worked on campus as a writing tutor and participated in Student Senate, the Garfield Center for Public Leadership, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Kowal was recognized as a four-year member of Hiram’s Alpha Society, a scholar in Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, a Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society scholar, and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society. He was also awarded the 2023 Russell L. Caldwell Memorial Research Award.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to have been selected as a recipient of this prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship,” said Kowal. “This scholarship will greatly assist me in continuing forward on my educational journey by helping me cover some of the costs of attending the University of Notre Dame.”
