Fifteen lucky new Hiram College students will have a chance to trim $1,000 off the cost of their first study-away or study-abroad trip. All new traditional students who submit a $200 deposit for the 2018-2019 academic year by Wednesday, Feb. 28 will be entered in a drawing to earn a Take a Trek Scholarship.
Known for its vibrant faculty-led study-away and study-abroad trips, Hiram has opened doors for its students to explore such corners as Alaska, Zambia, New Zealand, China, Greece, South Africa, the Galapagos Islands, and the California coast, to name a few. The College offers two to three trips each semester. These meet a core curriculum requirement and also qualify as Hiram Connect experiences. As part of Hiram Connect, students complete a study-abroad/away trip, research project, or internship.
“Students who study away grow and discover new purpose and meaning within both their academic experiences and future lives, which is invaluable,” says study-away coordinator Brittany Jackson ’04 ’15, who adds that the College has led study-abroad/away trips for students since 1940.
The College’s study-away courses not only leave lifelong impressions on students, they also focus on current and historical issues and feature a multidisciplinary dimension, adds Jackson, who also serves as assistant director of strategic academic initiatives for Hiram.
