The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Oberlin College, 63-44, tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 23) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Philips Gymnasium in Oberlin. [Box Score]
With the loss, the Terriers have now lost three straight games and drop to 3-12 overall and 1-6 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen improve to 3-13 overall and 2-5 NCAC.
Hiram led, 4-2, in the opening minutes of the first half, but an 8-0 scoring run by Oberlin gave the Yeowomen a 10-4 advantage at the 15:14 minute mark and never trailed in the game again. Oberlin led by as many as 20 points, 34-14, with 51 seconds left in the period and took a commanding 34-16 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, Hiram narrowed the gap to 13 points on several occassions with the last one being a 55-42 deficit with 2:07 left to play thanks to a three-pointer by freshman guardJess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood). But that would be as close as the Terriers would get as Oberlin cruised to the 63-44 final.
Both teams struggled from the field with the edge going in favor of Oberlin who shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) and held Hiram to just 28.8 percent (17-of-59) shooting.
Oberlin had three players score in double figures led by Alyssa Clark with game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Syrea Thomas and Katie Thompson rounded out the Yeowomen double digit scorers with 10 points each.
Hiram had one player in double figures in sophomore forward Alex Dellas (Willoughby/South) with 12 points on six-of-11 shooting (54.5 percent). She also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Hiram will look to end its three-game losing skid next Wednesday (Jan. 30) when it hosts Kenyon College at 7:30 p.m. at Price Gymnasium.
