ADA, OHIO — The Hiram College volleyball team suffered a tough start to the 2008 season today (Friday, Aug. 29) with a pair of losses on the first day of the Ohio Northern University Invitational at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The Terriers were defeated by Calvin (Mich.) College, 3-0, in the opening match and fell short of the College of Mount St. Joseph, 3-0, in the second match. [ONU Invitational Web Site]
Following today’s matches, the Terriers are 0-2 overall. Calvin won both of its matches and are 2-0 while Mount St. Joseph also won both of its matches to start 2-0.
Against Calvin, the Knights jumped out to a two-set advantage winning by identical scores of 25-17. Hiram kept the third match close, but Calvin managed to hang on for a 25-21 win and the three-set victory.
In the second match against Mount St. Joseph, Hiram again found itself behind, 2-0, after falling short in the opening set, 26-24, and dropping the second set, 25-22. The Lions took control of what turned out to be the third and final set, 25-15, resulting in a 3-0 overall victory.
Hiram will look to rebound from today’s outcome with the final day of the ONU Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 30) in Ada. The Terriers will play against Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University in the first match of the day at 10 a.m., followed by the final match against host school ONU at 12:15 p.m.
