The Hiram College swimming and diving teams were defeated by Wittenberg University this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 19) in a North Coast Athletic Conference dual meet at Alumni Memorial Pool on Senior Day. The Terrier women lost, 133-107, while the men fell, 110-95. In addition, freshman men’s swimmer Santiago Morales (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Bilboa) set yet another pool record. It is his second pool record, and third record overall, in the past two days. Also, freshman Zach Wegman (Knoxville, Tenn./Bereon)posted a time of 8:57.52 in the 800-meter freestyle andwhen converted to yards, his time set a school record in the 1000-yard free. With the losses, the women are now 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the NCAC in dual meet competition. The men are 3-5 overall and 1-3 NCAC.
The women had three individual event winners and one multi-event winner in senior All-NCAC swimmer Shelly Leshe (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) who won both the 200-meter individual medley (2:36.85) and the 100-meter butterfly (1:07.84). Junior Brittany Cowden (Copley) was the other event winner for Hiram recording a top-time of 1:23.86 in the 100-meter breaststroke.
The men were paced by freshman Travis Subda (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins) who posted victories in three events including the 50-meter freestyle (25.50 seconds), 100-meter freestyle (55.63 seconds) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:11.61). Morales won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:58.21, setting a Hiram pool record. Also recording wins against Wittenberg was sophomore Adam Warner (Norwalk) in the 200-meter IM (2:21.85) and Wegman in the 100-meter butterfly (1:02.24). His 800-meter freestyle time (8:57.52) converts to 10:06.99 in the 1000-yard free setting a Hiram record by almost eight seconds. The previous record was held by Mike Trow ’06 who recorded a time of 10:14.53 in the event as a senior.
